A continuing children’s book world for the story of Brúnó, Beki and Báró

For the second volume of Gyarmati Judit’s successful children’s book, we once again created the illustration and book design work. The distinctive challenge of this project was to preserve the visual world already known from the first book, while the new story introduced fresh scenes, new characters and new moods. The aim was for the sequel to remain visually connected to the first volume, while also working as a lively storybook in its own right.

Project overview

Task Children’s book illustration, cover design and print preparation
Client Gyarmati Judit
Scope More than 10 illustrations
Main focus Preserving the visual world of the first book while adding new characters and scenes

Familiar characters in new story situations

One of the most important tasks in the sequel was to keep Brúnó, Beki and Báró recognisable. In a second volume, children are not meeting completely new figures; they are returning to characters they may already know from the first book. For this reason, the proportions, atmosphere and visual character of the figures had to be carried forward consistently.

New characters within an existing visual world

The story also introduced new figures, including the new owner, who plays an important role in the book. When designing these new characters, they needed to have their own personality while still fitting into the visual world already established in the first volume. This kind of character expansion works best when the reader can feel both continuity and something new.

More than 10 illustrations for key scenes

The book included more than 10 illustrations showing the important moments of the story. The images do more than present attractive scenes. They also give children atmosphere, emotion and visual support for following the story. In a sequel, it is especially important that the illustrations help readers return to the familiar world while keeping the new events fresh.

Cover design and print preparation for the second volume

The cover design received special attention because it needed to connect to the previous book while also creating interest in the new story. Complete print preparation was also part of the project, so the images, pages, margins and colours could be brought together in a print-ready form.

In a children’s book sequel, illustration works best when it preserves the familiar character world while adding a fresh visual experience for the new story.
